The next time you and your family visit a U.S. zoo, make sure to pick up a program that lists the shows at the zoo. Some of the best Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited parks allow you to watch giraffes, elephants, wild birds, sea lions and primates at feeding time. You may even be able to have a word with a zoo keeper who regularly cares for your favorite animals. Some zoos have state-of-the-art 4-D movie technology at their facilities, while others offer comedic stage shows that will have your kids giggling and begging to see it again.

There is always something going on at the Houston Zoo! Visitors can expect a whole day of continuous activities and shows. The morning kicks off at 10 am with a “Meet the Zoo Keeper” talk at Natural Encounters, which includes elephant bathing time or, if you prefer, attend another “Meet the Zoo Keeper” talk at Komodo Dragon for the tiger animal training show. Other “Meet the Keeper” shows include sea lions (11), giant eland (11:30), various natural encounters animals (12, 1, 3:30, 4), sifaka/primates (12), aquarium (1:30), elephants (1:30), cassowary (2), red capped mangabeys/primates (2:30), sea lions (2:30) and giraffes (5). See a snake feeding at the reptile house at 10:15, bat feeding at the children’s zoo at 10:30, vulture feeding at 11:15, saddle-billed stork feeding at Bird of the World at 1:20, great hornbill feeding at 1:45, babirusa feeding in the Wortham World of Primates at 2, pelican feeding at the children’s zoo at 3, flamingo feeding or laughing kookaburra feeding in Zoo’s of the World at 3:15 and Tropical Bird House Rainforest feedings at 3:30. Lion animal training happens at 10:30, which is always a treat. Kids will enjoy: “Story Safari” at the Butterfly Stage in the children’s zoo at 10:30 and 11; “Zooper Challenge” at the Butterfly Stage at 12 and 12:30; a special animal presentation at the Butterfly Stage at 1:30; or “Zoo Adventures” at the Werler Stage at 3 and 3:30.

There are some classic shows at the zoo in San Diego. Each day at 11 and 3, the “Sea Lions Rock” show at the Wegeforth Bowl features California’s very own sea lions, which perform a number of tricks. “Take Flight — An Avian Adventure” takes place at the Hunte Amphitheater, which showcases ravens, eagles, storks, macaws and other “winged wonders” all led by comedic animal training expert Steve Martin. At night, Martin also produces “Soar — A Symphony in Flight,” which features colorful birds swooping around dazzling lights to inspirational music. Then, of course, there is the zoo’s famous “Dr. Zoolittle Show,” where kids learn about veterinary care from a zany doctor.

No matter where you are, there will be shows at the zoo to captivate you. After a full day of walking around, your feet will be begging you for a moment’s rest. A 30-minute show is the perfect way to let your dogs rest while learning more about your favorite exotic animals and endangered species. After learning more, your kids may find an interest in biology, the life of a zoo keeper of veterinary work. It is the zoo’s hope that your family will also take the time to consider the importance of animal species conservation and habitat preservation as well.
